What you can do in Townsville

With over 300 days of sunshine each year, a local culture that’s is relaxed and welcoming, stunning beaches and a growing list of restaurants, cafés and boutique shopping. It is no wonder Townsville is ever growing as a popular holiday destination for both domestic and international tourists.

The Strand is a 2.5 km stretch of beautifully landscaped gardens, playgrounds and of course the famous waterpark and Rockpool swimming enclosure. The water is clear and the sand is clean. It really is a beautiful beach. The path is wide enough that children can run and play without being close to the road. There are so many playgrounds and activities to keep them amused, it allows parents the freedom to just sit and enjoy the breathtaking views of Magnetic Island.
While largly, it is residential housing and holiday complexes that line the Strand waterfront, there is an ever growing range of quality cafe's and resturaunts opening up in the area. Offering visitors the option to dine and enjoy the magnificent view accross the water.

Bird lovers will delight at the black cockatoos that entertain travellers during the day, making grooming of the Strand pathways a real challenge for the local council.

The amphitheatre at the Gregory Street Headland plays host to a number of community events including the beating of the Drums every full moon. This is a must for the kids - everyone is encouraged to join in. The atmosphere is warm, welcoming and most of all, super fun.

The rockpool is a man-made swimming enclosure that uses the fresh ocean water. The grass is manicured, gardens landscaped and there are play activities for the kids. It is closed every Thursday for cleaning which keeps the water quality for swimmers.

Swimming in the ocean year round is not a problem in Townsville. There are  2 large stinger nets, anchored in the water between November and May each year. One is located next to the Rockpool - the other in front of the Strand Park, next to the Jetty.

Free electric BBQ sites are scattered along the Strand promenade. They are clean and well maintained. They really are a tribute to the hardworking effort of our local council.
